DIY Sleeveless Dress in 6 Easy Steps

Hello everyone,

Welcome To Thread It Thursday!!!

Today I wanted to share a very easy to make sewing project.  So that if you are new to sewing you will not feel overwhelmed.

For this project, I used a Black with White Polka Dot Knit Ponte De Roma. If you are new to sewing, working with knit fabric can be a bit tricky at first. So start with a Ponte Knit.  It sews very easily and has a great weight to it and has a nice amount of stretch.

Materials:
About 1 -2 yards of knit fabric (I love Ponte De Roma)
A t-shirt (slightly loose fitting)
Sewing Machine
Coordinating Thread
Ball Points Needle ( This is essential for working with knit fabric’s)

Instructions:

Lay your fabric as shown below. Cut 1″ away from your t-shirt.

image

Now fold your fabric so you can cut out your second piece. Lay the 1st piece you cut out on top and cut around. No extra seam allowance needed.

image

image

You will end up with two identical pieces

image

Next pin the pieces with the right sides facing (polka-dot touching).

image

Sew across the shoulders with a stretch stitch or zig-zag using a 1/2″ seam allowance. Sew down the sides with the same type of stitch but with a 5/8″ seam allowance. Try on your dress and make any needed adjustments. Once you have the right fit, finish the shoulder seams with a serger, zig-zag stitch or pinking shears.

image

Next hem the neck, sleeves(using a straight stitch). Next hem the bottom( using a stretch stitch or zig-zag). By turning your fabric under 1/2″ and then turn again 1/2″ and sew using 1/2″ seam allowance.

You’re all done. The only thing left to do is to style it and wear it as you desire. To make this dress with sleeves check out my detailed tutorial here.

Contrasting Sleeve T-Shirt Refashion

Hello everyone,

Welcome To Thread It Thursday!!!!!

image

Today’s post was inspired by my oldest daughter.  She so graciously offered to help me clean out and organize my fabric stash. With her help, I was able to giveaway and get rid of a lot of fabric. Once we were all done she said do you think you can make me a t-shirt with leopard sleeves.  I thought and said what a “great idea”. Now I can’t make something for one child and not the other…..so we quickly found a fabric that my youngest would love.  I quickly got to work. With all that said……let’s get into this tutorial.

Supplies:

T-shirt with or without sleeves
1/2 yd of knit fabric
Sleeve pattern for stretch fabric (* I will include a video that shows you how to draft your own if needed.)
Coordinating Thread

Method:

1. If you’re using a t-shirt with sleeves remove them. (* the shirts I used were sleeveless)

2. Using your sleeve pattern cut out 2 sleeves.

3. Sew sleeves, attach to shirt and finish the seams. I used a 1/2″ seam allowance for mine.

It’s as easy as that.

DIY Pink & Grey Striped T-shirt

Hello everyone,

It’s Thread it Thursday.

image

I made a decision to work on improving my sewing skills 1 pattern and 1 project at a time. Patterns can be a bit confusing for me. So for a while a worked on projects without patterns. Now that a bit of time has passed, I’ve learned a bit more and regained my confidence. I am ready to give the pattern’s that I didn’t give away a try.

Today’s project was made using Simplicity’s pattern 2156 view C. I bought this so long ago and never did a thing with it until now.

image

I made the following alterations.

Added a 7″ zipper in the back
Added 3″ in length
Shortened the sleeves
Cut the neck band on the bias

I must say that this pattern was easy to follow and make custom changes to. I really enjoyed working on this and little by little my sewing skills are improving.

Most of all my daughter, really loves it. Which definitely brings a big smile to my face.

Statement Coat

I love a great coat over a simple pair of jeans and tee or over a simple dress.  It just gives the look a little something extra to amp up a simple look without over doing it.

Tutorial for 2 DIY Tops with on trend accents

A few days ago I saw a great DIY T SHIRT TUTORIAL.  I had to give it a try right away. I went through my fabric stash an I already had everything I needed.  It’s a great feeling to want to dive into a project and have all the supplies you need, so you can start right away. A first time for everything. ..lol.

The shirt’s took me about an hour for each.  You can get as creative as you like.  The tutorial I followed she used one color for the top and genuine leather.  For the exclamation top I used two different fabric’s and faux leather.  For the lace and striped knit I simply followed the tutorial without adding any of the embellishments.  You will be given the option of pockets or exclamation point. You will enjoy the ease of this DIY.    It was a great and I must try it again soon.

DIY POLKA DOT T-SHIRT Tutorial and Fabric Giveaway

I love POLKA DOTS……..and one day while on pinterest I came across a super easy DIY Tutorial for making a POLKA DOT T-SHIRT.
The best part I already had all the supplies I needed on hand.   So lets get started.

DSCF2307

Supplies:
* Fabric Paint ( I used Tulip brand)
* Solid Color T-SHIRT
* Circular Sponge paint brushes  (I purchased the Martha Stewart Sponges from Jo-ann Fabric’s…..remember to use your coupon on this item. I believe her assortment pack was $9.99 and with my coupon I paid $6.00.)
* paper plate
* cardboard

Next I open my shirt and pulled it across my ironing board sliding my cardboard underneath. You will need to work on one layer of the fabric at a time, this includes the sleeve if you choose to do them.

Pour a portion of the paint onto the paper plate and dip your brush into the paint and press your dots onto the T-SHIRT.  Repeat this all over the shirt. Always making sure you have cardboard under the surface your working on. I gave each section I worked on 5 minutes to dry before working on the next. Once your done and the paint is 100% dry. Throw it in the dryer to set the paint for 20-30 minutes. Then it’s ready to wear.

To wash turn inside out and wash as usual. Line dry or toss in the dryer.

A big thank you to Merrick’s Art Blog for the inspiration and tutorial. If you have not checked out her blog please do. She is sensational at re-fashioning and diy sewing tutorials.

Enjoy and Happy Diy(ing)
