DIY EASY TO MAKE HANDBAG ORGANIZER

Hello everyone,

Welcome to Thread It Thursday!!!!

I love a sewing project that takes minimal time and has an immediate use. So my latest project is a handbag, organizer. I switch handbags often to compliment the outfit that I am wearing.  To make this transition simple and to ensure I always have what I need in my handbag at all times. Most importantly it helps me to keep my handbag “ORGANIZED.”  I don’t have to worry about my handbag feeling like a bottomless pit……digging around like a crazy woman…..trying to find what I’m looking for…..lol.

DIY Dolman Sleeve Dress

image

A few weeks back I was shopping with my daughter’s. My oldest is a breeze to shop with. She loves shopping and always finds thing’s she loves. My youngest hates shopping for long durations and rarely finds thing’s she really likes……. the struggle. Thankfully on this outing she finds a dress in store # 2. She tries the dress on and the fit is perfect.  She loves loose and flowy clothing…..in her words I don’t like to be squeezed.  Meaning nothing that hugs her to tightly. She is all about cute and comfortable.  So both girls get what they want and wear the dresses they picked to an upcoming event, we were attending.

A few weeks later, I was cleaning out my fabric stash and find a yard and a half of Fuschia Peachskin fabric and it hit me…. why not make my youngest a dress like the one she recently got. So that’s exactly what I did and here’s how.

wpid-photogrid_1408740287178.jpg

Materials :

1 .5 Yards of 58-60″ wide fabric
A dolman sleeve dress or  a regular t-shirt
1/4″ elastic (optional)
Coordinating Thread

Instructions:

Fold your fabric in half right sides facing.

image

Lay your dress or t-shirt on top.

image

Cut out 1″ away from your dress or t-shirt all the way around. (Feel free to add more length at the bottom. I added an additional 2″ because my daughter wanted it bit longer than the original.)

image

Now pin and sew using a 1/2″ seam allowance.

image

image

Finish you seam with a serger, zig-zag stitch or pinking shears.
image

Try your dress on and mark where your would like your neckline. Remove the dress and now mark 1″ above your desired neckline mark.

image

Cut the neckline only on the fabric that will be the front of your dress. At the 1″ mark, that’s above your desired neckline.

Now hem the neckline by folding over 1/2″ and fold over again 1/2″ and sew close to the edge. Do this to your bottom hemline and sleeves. (For the sleeves I folded over 1/4″ and then again 1/4″ and sewed close to the edge)

Now give all your seams a good press.

image

With your leftover fabric, cut 2 strips of fabric 3″ width x 37″ length. ( Feel free to add more to the length if needed. This is going to be the sash/belt for your dress).

image

Lay the strips on top of each other with right sides of the fabric touching and sew 1/2″ seam on one short edge and finish the seam as desired.

image

image

Now you will have one long strip. Press out the strip and fold it in half lengthwise. Sew 1/2″ seam down the long strip.

image

image

Turn your long sash/belt right side out and give it a good press. Turn in the edges 1/4″ and topstitch close to the edge.

image

image

Set the sash / belt aside for now.

Cut out a 5″×5″ piece of fabric.

image

Fold in half lengthwise right sides facing and sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance.

image

Turn the fabric right sides out and press with the seam in the center. Fold the short edges 1/4″ and top stitch on the edge.

image

Set this piece aside for now.

Now with your dress turned to the wrong side and the back facing you. Measure down 15″ and across 4″ and draw a line. Then make a line 1″ above this mark like so.

image

Cut (2) 1/4″ elastic pieces 3″ in length.
Attach to your dress on each of the lines with a zig-zag stitch making sure to stretch the elastic as you sew. Be mindful that your only sewing the elastic on the back of your dress.

image

image

image

We are almost done.

Now turn your dress right sides out. The back facing you. You will see a little gathering affect from where the elastic was sewn.
image

Now get the small tube we sewed earlier and pin it over the gathering like so.

image

Sew across the top and bottom long edges only.

image

When done it will look like this.

image

Now pull your sash/ belt through.

image

Now you’re ready to wear your dress. Great all year around. Add a cardigan and boots/booties, ballet flats, heels for the fall/winter months and of course for summer and spring great sandals.

DIY Nautical Inspired Tote With Repurposed Leather Straps

Hello everyone,

Welcome to Thread It Thursday!!!!

image

I am particularly excited about this post because I was able to repurpose an item to make this tote. Which cut down on the time it took to make this project. I admit it I’m an impatient sewer who loves to sew. Let’s dive into this project.

To make this tote you will need:

1/2 yd – 1 yd of outer fabric ( depends on the width of your fabric choice)

1/2 yd – 1 yd of lining fabric ( depending on width of your fabric choice)

1 leather belt as long as you can find ( I found mine at a local thrift shop for $1.50)

* For fabric choices I would recommend duct canvas, canvas, woven cotton for outer and the lining can be any of the previous mentioned or a nice quilter’s cotton

Method:

Cut your lining on the fold (18″ L X 17″ W)

image

Cut your outer piece on the fold (20″ L 17″ W)

image

With right sides together sew down each side of your lining fabric using a 1/2″ seam allowance. Next trim the seam and finish as desired ( i.e. overlock, pinking shears or zig-zag stitch )

image

Repeat the same steps from above on your outer fabric piece.

Next we are going to box out the bottom (* this step is optional)

Angle out the bottom edges of your lining.  Measure up 2″ from the pointed end and make a mark across ( use pins to secure into place. )  Sew across the marked area and finish seam as desired using any of the finishing methods mentioned above. Repeat these steps with your outer fabric.

image

image

Press all seams so that everything is nice and professionally finished.

Turn your outer and lining fabric right side out.  Place the lining inside the outer making sure to align at side seams.

image

image

Fold the outer fabric top edge over 1/4″ and press.  Fold it over again 1 1/2″ press and pin to secure everything into place. This method will enclose the raw edges of outer and lining fabric. Sew around close to the edge and give your stitching a good press.

image

It’s time for the final step. Attaching the leather straps aka leather belt. Cut off the buckle and then cut the other end of the belt to square it off.  Next fold the belt in half and cut.

Measure 5″ from each side seam and place your straps at this point (use clips to hold everything in place.) Your strap should not go below the seam line at the top of the bag.

image

Sew the straps on using the box with X  technique.

image

Your tote is all done and ready to use. I have a surprise for you…..your tote is reversible. Two bag’s in one!!!!!

I really enjoy hearing from you and would love to know how have you repurposed an item(s) into your sewing project(s)???

DIY 20 Minute Kimono Cardigan

Hello Everyone,

Welcome To Thread It Thursday!!!!

imageA few week’s back I mentioned that I cleaned out my fabric stash. In that stash, I found some large scrap pieces which I used for a project Be an e-tailPR blogger” target=”_blank”>here. Also in that stash was this sheer like white knit…..that I have been meaning to do something with since I started sewing 4 or 5 years ago.  When I saw it I immediately knew this would be great for a Kimono Cardigan.

With the fabric in hand, I needed to find a really easy tutorial.

To make my project a little simple and quick I used a light weight knit and I didn’t hem anything. Which is why this project only took 20 minutes from start to finish. If you’re looking to make a cardigan like this with a more structured fabric and check out this tutorial here. It just takes a bit more time……but it’s worth it if you have the time.

Contrasting Sleeve T-Shirt Refashion

Hello everyone,

Welcome To Thread It Thursday!!!!!

image

Today’s post was inspired by my oldest daughter.  She so graciously offered to help me clean out and organize my fabric stash. With her help, I was able to giveaway and get rid of a lot of fabric. Once we were all done she said do you think you can make me a t-shirt with leopard sleeves.  I thought and said what a “great idea”. Now I can’t make something for one child and not the other…..so we quickly found a fabric that my youngest would love.  I quickly got to work. With all that said……let’s get into this tutorial.

Supplies:

T-shirt with or without sleeves
1/2 yd of knit fabric
Sleeve pattern for stretch fabric (* I will include a video that shows you how to draft your own if needed.)
Coordinating Thread

Method:

1. If you’re using a t-shirt with sleeves remove them. (* the shirts I used were sleeveless)

2. Using your sleeve pattern cut out 2 sleeves.

3. Sew sleeves, attach to shirt and finish the seams. I used a 1/2″ seam allowance for mine.

It’s as easy as that.

Need help drafting a sleeve pattern.  Check out the video below.
